Home from Home has a large Charity Shop, which sells a huge range of good quality second hand furniture, household goods, electrical items, bric-a-brac, books, DVDs, CDs, curtains, cushions etc.
Come and see what we have to offer! You’ll be amazed by the prices.
The following donated items are not sold here in our Charity Shop as they are some of the main items we keep for supply to local tenants in need;

We offer a free collection service for furniture and electrical items, ideal if you just need to clear out any good quality chairs, beds, tables or TVs.
We love donations of high quality items!
Whether you're making space in your wardrobe by getting rid of old clothes, freeing yourself of unwanted books, or just having a bit of a clear out, you can use our free collection service or bring your pre-loved goods down to our shop.

Collection Area
If you live in West Dunbartonshire / Helensburgh and have furniture or household items you wish to donate, then please contact us by phone or call in to our shop and we will arrange for it to be collected free of charge.
All donations received will be given to people in need or sold in the Home from Home shop for reuse.
What we can accept
We collect most household items including 3-piece suites, beds, chests of drawers, tables and chairs, wardrobes, wall units, fridges and freezers.
Before you donate we need to ask some questions:
- Is everything in good condition, free from rips and tears in good working order?
- Sofas, Chairs, mattresses must be in good clean condition, not stained, marked or ripped.
- Is everything complete? - if dismantled all fixtures, nuts and bolts need to be present
- Any white goods (fridges and freezers) must be less than 5 years old, clean, undamaged and in good working order
- Are large electricals less than 5 years old and still in good working order?
- Are sofas still firm to sit on, the leather in good condition, not cracked or split?
- Can large items be easily removed from your property in one piece?
- All upholstered goods must have a Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 safety label attached.( See examples of labels to look for below )

Please do not be offended about the questions we ask, we need to check all items are legally compliant, in good condition, have not come to the end of their useful life and we can pass on to our customers.
If we cannot accept your items but believe another organisation can help you we will let you know.
If we are collecting items from you on our van, we are unable to accept any items until they have been viewed by the driver.
What we cannot accept
Unfortunately, we cannot take all items offered to us. Items that are stained, marked, or ripped regretfully cannot be accepted.
Other items not accepted include furniture containing woodworm, gas appliances, electrical items in need of major repair or in a rusty condition, and upholstered goods that do not meet the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988.
Regretfully we are unable to accept exceptionally large and/or heavy items due to the risks to our drivers associated with lifting and moving them.
Goods left outside in wet weather will also be rejected.
Broken televisions or other non-working electricals.
We do our best to check that furniture is acceptable before we collect it. However, occasionally our drivers will decide that they cannot take your item/s. This is based on issues such as quality, size, and risks to health and safety. They will clearly explain their decision not to take any item/s.
Fire safety labels
There are versions of a fire labels as shown in this section. They are permanent and will be sewn into or stapled to the item.
Unfortunately WE CANNOT ACCEPT items where the labels are not on each individual item.
The fire label may be on any external surface of the item including underneath removable seating and cushions.

Upholstered Goods
Glass larger than 21cm x 30cm
Glass larger than 21cm x 30cm (the size of an A4 sheet of paper) must be toughened or laminated. This is usually indicated by a BS kite mark or reference number

How do I claim a package
Home from Home will need to see:
A document with your name and address; Proof (e.g. a recent letter
from Job Centre or DWP) that you are on benefits or low income.
What will it cost me
Furniture etc. is free but you pay for delivery at the time of ordering.
Fridges, Freezers, Fridge Freezers
Subject to availability for Furniture Request Claimants only, who can also claim for a charge of £10 per appliance.
This charge is on top of the £20 or £30 delivery charge paid for furniture, if items are in stock in stock at time furniture order is placed.
We no longer supply
Cookers, Ovens, Hobs, Washing Machines and Tumble Dryers.

Volunteer
The success of Home from Home is entirely dependent upon its volunteers.
Our volunteers are from different backgrounds, are all ages and have different skills and abilities and all are valued.
We have volunteering opportunities in a variety of roles including:
Volunteering opportunities
We provide placements from local organisations including Tell Training, the Prince’s Trust and the Community Service Agency.
Expenses are paid and a hot lunch provided. Basic training is provided in health and safety, manual handling etc.
